Southern Sudanese Youth Connection

Youth & Adult Programs

Programs & Services Offered

We are striving to accomplish our statement of purpose through offering the services listed below to Sudanese and other immigrant men, women and children living in Sumner County. We are particularly focusing on Sudanese women, who have not been able to take advantage of opportunities offered because of family obligations, time constraints, child care, and transportation issues. These programs will greatly enhance the Sudanese people's integration and success in America

  • Counseling services focusing on the stresses of coming to a new country.
  • Referrals to health care providers and family health care information for preventing disease and ongoing health needs.
  • Accompaniment of refugee families to service providers including health care and other social programs for low-income people.
  • Discussion groups that offer a free exchange of ideas concerning refugees in Middle Tennessee
  • Translation and interpretation between families and their service providers or eligibility officials, job interviews, court cases, etc.  Translation would be offered in Nuer, Dinka, Anyuak, Clucuk, Arabic, and any other tribal dialect.  There is not a common language in Sudan and we can serve as translators for each dialect.
  • To help Sudanese Refugees to find affordable housing in the Middle Tennessee area and assist them in filling out paper work related to that
  • Helping newcomers find jobs and teaching them how to drive, how to obtain vehicle registration and any other tasks of daily living for which they need assistance

We have seen many lives changed for the better. The After School Program has enjoyed great success in the past year. Twelve children have received tutoring and help with their homework every Monday and Tuesday afternoon, with quantifiable improvement through improved report cards, as well as an overall increase in their self esteem and their belief that they can succeed.

The goal of the Southern Sudanese Youth Connection is to continue to make a difference among our people and plan to increase our services.

We hope to serve all of our community.  The leadership of our organization has the ability to understand the unique needs of our community and our programs are designed to supplement services already available in the community.  To enhance the quality of service, we have the flexibility to tackle most of the following needs and desire the resources to couple with that flexibility.
